ABOUT NARCOMANCER
Sleep is essential for all forms of health, both physical and mental. Most sleep advice tends to focus on “sleep hygiene” — dark, cold bedroom, reducing screen time, etc. — or alternatively to offer medication, supplements, or tech gimmicks. Although these approaches can be effective for helping normal sleepers improve their sleep quality, they are often insufficient, or even harmful, for people who struggle with sleep.
Focussing on sleep hygiene, supplements, medication, or tech, when your subconscious has been conditioned to remain stuck in fight-or-flight, can actually worsen sleep anxiety, reduce sleep quality, and become counterproductive. Even worse, sleeping pills interfere with the brain’s natural healing process and accelerate neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia, and may even increase the risk of cancer.
I suffered from severe, chronic, treatment-resistant insomnia for the first 30 years of my life. Most of the advice and interventions that I tried didn’t help at all. Many of them made things much worse. Trying to “optimize” my sleep into perfection exacerbated my anxiety around sleep and amplified the severity of my insomnia symptoms.
After a process of rigorous research and obsessive self-experimentation, I developed a simple process that radically transformed my own sleep, without pills, supplements, or gimmicks. Now, I’ve been sleeping easily, deeply, and happily, for over five years.
